Behind the Seams: Why In-House Fabrication Matters for Luxury Interior Design Projects

In luxury interior design, the difference is always in the details. Clients may see the finished drapery, the perfectly aligned shades, or the seamless installation, but what they do not see is often what matters most. The process behind the seams can determine whether a project feels merely complete or truly exceptional.

In house fabrication gives designers greater control, clearer communication, and the flexibility to execute highly customized work without compromise. For luxury projects where precision and polish are expected, that difference is significant.

Customization Without Limits

Luxury design rarely fits into standard formulas. Ceiling heights vary, architectural details demand special attention, and client expectations leave little room for approximation. In house fabrication allows for customization at every stage of production.

Drapery Fullness

Fullness plays a major role in how drapery reads in a space. Two times fullness creates a different effect than two and a half times or even three times fullness. With in house fabrication, fullness is not a preset option. It is intentionally calculated based on fabric, scale, hardware, fabric patterns, and the overall design vision. The result is drapery that looks proportionate, tailored, and truly custom.

Tall panels draping properly due to custom fullness

With taller panels, each pleat needs added fullness to support proper drape and proportion.

Pleating to fabric patterns lets the design shine

Pleating to pattern preserves the integrity of the fabric design.

Roman Shade Ring Spacing

Ring spacing on Roman shades directly affects how a shade stacks, folds, and functions. In a luxury setting, uneven folds or bulky stacking is not acceptable. In house fabrication allows for precise adjustments in ring placement based on fabric weight, lining choice, and shade height. This level of control ensures smooth operation and clean, consistent folds.

Thoughtful ring spacing makes it possible to pleat Roman shades to pattern, so every fold supports the overall design.

Ripplefold Snap Spacing

Ripplefold drapery was originally developed for commercial settings to reduce yardage requirements and control costs. Standard ripplefold uses 4.25 inch snap tape paired with either 60%, 80%, 100% or 120% carriers. The 4.25 inch snap spacing produces flatter, less substantial ripples that often result in flaring at the hem. Increasing the fullness in standard ripplefold drapery means going from 60% carriers up to 100% or even 120% carriers. This only gives you more of the skimpy ripples that are pressed tighter together, not fuller, better behaving drapery meant to be enjoyed.

To elevate ripplefold drapery from a commercial setting to luxury homes, we stray from the standard and use custom snap spacing. By increasing the space between the snaps, you achieve a deeper, fuller wave that drapes more gracefully and creates a softer, more refined appearance. This added fullness due to the custom snap spacing also minimizes the stackback and allows the drapery to function beautifully without overwhelming the window.

Custom snap spacing ensures beautifully full panels that work for years to come

These panels have 6 inch custom snap spacing so the ripple of the panel holds its shape from top to bottom without flaring.

Custom snap spacing can also be aligned to the fabric pattern repeat, ensuring the design flows consistently across each ripple. The result is ripplefold drapery that feels tailored for luxury residential spaces, rather than adapted from commercial standards.

Ripple To Pattern

Precise snap placement allows ripplefold drapery to keep the fabric design consistent across every fold.

Communication That Supports the Design Process

Luxury projects often involve multiple rooms, tight timelines, and discerning clients. Clear communication between the designer and the fabrication team is essential. A truly luxurious experience is measured not only in the outcome, but in how smoothly the process unfolds.

An in house team provides direct access to the people actually building the treatments. Questions can be answered quickly, details clarified immediately, and adjustments made without layers of delay.

Consistent communication practices, such as our weekly project updates, keep designers informed at every stage of production. Access to a dedicated team text line allows for real time coordination when decisions need to be made quickly. This transparency reduces uncertainty and allows designers to confidently update their clients.

Craftsmanship That Solves Problems

No two luxury homes are identical. Unique architecture often presents challenges that require creative thinking rather than standard solutions.

Arched windows, angled walls, uneven ceilings, deep moldings, and specialty hardware all demand thoughtful problem solving. An in house fabrication team can assess these conditions, collaborate on solutions, and adjust construction methods as needed.

Angled ceilings require custom solutions

Because the team is directly involved in both design interpretation and fabrication, they are able to anticipate potential issues before installation day. This proactive approach protects the integrity of the design and ensures that the finished product complements the architecture rather than fighting against it.

A Higher Standard Behind the Scenes

When fabrication happens in house, quality control is not outsourced. Materials, construction techniques, and finishing details are overseen by a team that understands the expectations of luxury interiors.

For designers, this means greater confidence. For clients, it means a finished result that feels effortless, even though significant expertise went into every seam, stitch, and measurement.
